MUDEJAR ART DESIGNATED WORLD HERITAGE BY UNESCO

 

Mudejar, Calatayud



The Mudejar art resulting from Jewish, Muslim and Christian cultures living emerged as an architectural style in the 12th century. This art is unique in the world and it is characterized by an extremely refined and inventive use of brick and glazed tiles in architecture, especially in the belfries. Its beautiful buildings have been designated World Heritage by UNESCO. “Mudejar Abierto Sightseeing Service” provides free entry to these buildings.

 

 

CALATAYUD A MUST FOR CULTURE SEEKERS

Calatayud is distinctive not only for its Mudejar Art, awarded World Heritage by UNESCO, but also for a large number of attractions ( museums, pubs, restaurants, shops ) ideal for an enjoyable day out. We can definitely recommend taking a guided walking tour around Calatayud to discover hidden places where the history of this wonderful City was forged. In your visit you could discover that the city was founded by the Arabs in the 8th century and it was known as Qal’at Ayyud or "castle of Ayyud". Make also sure you don’t miss: San Juan el Real Church The main dome of San Juan el Real Church boasts fine paintings by Francisco de Goya one of the great masters of painting in Spain. Archaeology Museum. It provides a unique opportunity to discover the history of the site of Municipium Augusta Bilbilis which corresponds to the location of an ancient Celtiberian-roman city.

DO Calatayud (Calatayud Quality Wine-Producing Region) extends over 5,621 ha (13,899 acres) of vineyards which are located at 500- 1.040 m (1,640 – 3,412 fit) above sea level and are cultivated by over 2.000 growers. Garnacha represents over 50 % of the varieties planted. We suggest a wine & wellness Hotel Spa package including a trip to a wine cellar to see how the wine is made, to introduce to this wine producing region and even sample a glass and some thermal treatments to pamper yourself. MUNICIPIUM AUGUSTA BILBILIS SITE OF ANCIENT CELTIBERIAN-ROMAN CITY.

 

La antigua Bilbilis se encuentra a solo 4 Km del Balneario


Municipium Augusta Bilbilis was founded on the site of a Celt-Iberian settlement by the Romans with the name Augusta Bilbilis and was the birthplace of the poet Martial. The extensive remains of Augusta Bilbilis are approximately six kilometres to the north of the modern city of Calatayud. The site shows buildings foundations (Forum, Theatre, Thermae…) and sections of walls. There is also a centre on site providing background information with self-interpretive boards.
